Terms of Use and Privacy Summary

This short document explains how Treasure Hunt DB (“we,” “us,” “our”) works and what you agree to when you use it. If you create a Hunter Profile or browse the site, you agree to these terms.

1) Who can use the site

  • You must be at least 13 years old to create a hunter profile. If you’re 13–17, you need permission from a parent or guardian.
  • You agree to follow all applicable laws and these terms.

2) Accounts and one-time codes

  • To create/edit a profile, you provide an email to receive a one-time code. Keep your code private.
  • You are responsible for the activity on your profile.

3) What you can post

  • Your profile may include a username, bio, optional image, and notes about treasure hunts (favorites, participation, and short blurbs).
  • You retain ownership of your content, but grant us a non-exclusive license to host, display, and share it on the site and in search results.
  • Do not post anything illegal, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, deceptive, spammy, or infringing on others’ rights. We may remove content or profiles that violate these rules.

4) Profile visibility & search engines (Publicity / indexing)

  • Default: Profiles are set to noindex, nofollow (not intended for search engines).
  • Opt-in: If you enable “Allow search engines to index my profile,” your profile may be crawled, indexed, cached, or copied by third parties. We don’t control when search engines recrawl or remove cached copies. You can turn indexing off anytime; search results and caches may take time to update. Additionally, your a link to your profile and hunt comments may show on the detail pages of hunts you have participated in.

5) Privacy summary

  • Data we collect: your email (private), profile info you choose to publish (public), and basic technical logs (e.g., IP, device info) for security and analytics.
  • How we use it: to run the site, send sign-in codes and service messages, improve features, and protect against abuse. We do not sell your personal data.
  • Sharing: we may share data with service providers (e.g., email delivery, hosting) under contracts that protect your information, or when required by law.
  • Retention: we keep data as long as your profile exists or as needed to operate the service; backups may persist for a limited time.
  • Your choices: you can request to view, update, or delete your profile. Deleting your profile removes public content; some logs/backups may remain for a limited time.
  • Children: we don’t knowingly collect data from children under 13.

6) Privacy details

  • Legal basis (if applicable): we process your data to provide the service, with your consent (e.g., to send codes), and for legitimate interests like security.
  • Cookies/analytics: we may use cookies or similar technology for essential functionality and basic analytics. You can adjust browser settings to limit cookies; some features may not work fully.
  • Search indexing (Data disclosure / retention): If you enable search indexing, your public profile content may be accessed by search engine crawlers. Copies can persist in third-party caches/archives even after you disable indexing or delete your profile. We can remove content from our systems, but we cannot guarantee removal from third-party caches.
  • Security: we use reasonable safeguards, but no online service is 100% secure.
  • International use: your data may be stored in the U.S. and processed where our providers operate.

7) Acceptable use (short list)

  • Do not break the site, bypass security, or scrape at scale.
  • Do not impersonate others or post private information without consent.
  • Do not upload malware or attempt to disrupt service.

8) Intellectual property

  • The site’s code, design, and trademarks belong to us (and our licensors). You may not copy or reverse-engineer the site except as allowed by law.

9) Moderation; takedowns

  • We may remove content or restrict access at our discretion, especially for safety, legal, or copyright reasons.
  • To report an issue or request a takedown, contact us (see Section 12).

10) Disclaimers; limitation of liability

  • The site is provided “as is,” without warranties. We don’t guarantee accuracy, availability, or that you’ll solve any hunts.
  • To the extent allowed by law, we’re not liable for indirect or consequential damages. Our aggregate liability for any claim will not exceed the greater of $25 or the total amounts you paid us (if any) for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. The foregoing does not limit liability for fraud, willful misconduct, or where otherwise prohibited by law.

11) Changes to these terms

  • We may update these terms. If changes are material, we’ll post the new date here. Continued use means you accept the changes.

13) Governing law

  • These terms are governed by the laws of New York, without regard to conflicts of law. Disputes will be resolved in courts located in Monroe County, NY.
